The
fourth camp we were involved in this summer was for
the young adults of church. I (Sue) was on
the planning committee, and asked to coordinate
practical jokes! Yes, it's true. Somehow
-- who knows how? -- I've gotten a reputation for
practical jokes... and it's gotten so that everyone
waits with anticipation at who and what will be
next. To ensure that these special features
would happen at the camp, they gave me this special
staff position.
Ahh... somewhat hard to live
up to! I kept it fairly simple. The
first morning of the 3-day camp the group was all
headed out to go putt-putt golfing. I had
targetted three young women, and commented to them
as they were loading into a car about the HOT sun
that was bound to burn them. They were planning
to use sun lotion soon, they said. Oh, but
I had this wonderful lotion from America! They
were more than eager to use it, smearing it all
over their face and arms. Little did they
realize that it was fake tan lotion! Fortunately
for them, the color barely showed up-- it seems
they smeared it in TOO well,a nd were already too
dark. But this is a GOOD one for those who
might be of fairer skin!
The next joke was done while
the groups were performing skits. An old classic,
I snuck up to the room where some of the guys were
staying and did some stitchwork! I sewed the
seams of some of their pants, underwear, socks,
etc.... It caused quite a great stir when they were
at the public bath changing later that day!
The second morning, I snuck
over to the church EARLY and "padded"
the windowshields of one of the staff member's cars.
(Use your imagination if you're not sure what
I mean by "pad.") With a big smiley
face on the front and his name on the back windowshield...
and then of course a pad on the license plate and
tucked into the door handle, as well. I have
to say - this got the greatest reaction. They
tried to convince me that I had gotten the wrong
car, but I've been there, done that, and didn't
fall for it. This was an original that they
had never imagined before....
The last morning, I had suggested
to the planning committee that since the theme was
on relationships and dating, we end the camp with
a surprise, fake wedding. I've done this a
few times before, as well. The pastor loved
it, and took off with the idea.
The 3 days of camp I was busy
going back and forth, making a big old wedding cake
in the between times. Another staff member
was busy gathering supplies, making an archway,
getting candles, etc. As the wedding was announced
and suddenly the sanctuary was transformed into
a wedding ceremony, a staff member was dressed into
a wedding gown and a young guy from church was given
a tux. Little did I know -- the joke was ON
US! Because as the fake ceremony started,
the pastor announced that the wrong people were
standing at the front, and he called up two young
people from our group. They went and stood
at the front, and we found out that for REAL this
couple was announcing their intent to get married!
The fake celebration became a VERY REAL one
as we celebrated this happy event. The cake
was a big hit, as well, and I guess good practice
for the real wedding cake I'll make for their real
event in a few months.
