Eric and Sue met each other while they were
pursuing further training and mission education at Fuller Theological
Seminary. They were married in
1997, and came to Japan together in 2001. They have been ministering in
Sendai, Japan with Asian Access at Sendai L'Abri
Bible Church.
Eric is from Hawaii, and began to
sense a missionary call when he spent a summer in Brazil working with a
Japanese Brazilian church. Eric feels a special desire
to share Christ with Japanese children and those who are marginalized in
society. Eric graduated from University
of California Northridge with a degree in linguistics,
and then in 1997 graduated from Fuller Seminary
with a Master of Divinity.
Sue was born in Zimbabwe,
where her parents served as missionaries.
She first fell in love with Japan when she served there in a summer
mission trip during her college years.
Prior to meeting Eric, she spent 3 years in Japan working in a local
church with LIFE Ministries. She then worked
in training and human resources in the U.S. office
of LIFE Ministries/Asian Access, while she worked
on graduate studies at Fuller Seminary. During
these past two years in Japan, she has completed
her research and graduated in June with her PhD
in Intercultural Studies.
In January of
this year, they had the joy of adopting Owen Masaru
Takamoto when he was one month old. They are looking
forward to some time back in the U.S. this winter,
and to returning to Japan next spring to begin a
new church planting project.
Eric enjoys creating
and maintaining bonsai, jogging, basketball, and
nature. He follows Japanese sumo, as well. Sue
has been learning the traditional Japenese art of
making aizome --blue indigo cloth-- and has fun teaching
cooking classes and going to Starbucks coffee. They
both enjoy travel, going for walks with Owen and
Molly, their Maltese, and new adventures in Japan.
